Stoner leads first day at Sepang
The works Honda team continued with its strong showing in pre-season testing, with Casey Stoner setting the pace on the opening day of running at Sepang on Tuesday. The Australian posted the quickest time with a lap of 2m00.987s, outpacing team-mate Dani Pedrosa by nearly four tenths of a second. Stoner resumed testing with the same set-up he had used on the final day in the first test, and spent the day alternating between the two chassis options he had at his disposal.

Bentley isn't the only company that's been busy on the ice lately. Mazda just wrapped up a four-hour race in Åre, Sweden, that brought 20 MX-5 roadsters out on the open ice for a little fender-to-fender action.
Teams faced temperatures that dipped as low as -24 degrees Fahrenheit and stiff competition from racers from around the world. Spiked tires were standard equipment for all of the vehicles, though it's worth noting that the talent behind the wheel wasn't professional by any stretch of the imagination. Mazda invited fans and automotive journalists from a total of 26 countries to participate in the event.
While early on it looked as if a team from Australia would take home the checkered flag, a late-race spin allowed a Russian team to pull ahead and complete the most laps around the three-mile circuit within the four-hour time frame. Rosberg tops Barcelona day three
Nico Rosberg put Mercedes on top with a rapid late lap in a Barcelona testing session that began wet before later drying. A shower at the start of the morning and a combination of high humidity and low temperatures meant it was not until the eve of the lunchbreak that drivers were able to try slick tyres, and even then conditions remained treacherous, with lap times five seconds off yesterday's fully-dry pace even on slicks. But by the afternoon only a few off-line damp patches remained, and Rosberg made the most of the clear running to go quickest with a 1m23.168s on a single-lap, qualifying-style, run with a quarter of an hour to go.

Porsche buffs go searching for great German beer... deep in the heart of Texas?

A good roadtrip needs a few items for success; great people, interesting destinations and, of course, the right vehicles. We can't vouch for the people on a personal level in this tale, but Autoweek took on a Texas roadtrip and seems to have gotten the ingredients just right. How do six tuned Porsches, 800 miles and four breweries sound? As long as the drinking is done when the driving is finished (which of course it was), then you would be correct to say it sounds like heaven on earth.
Autoweek's Jeff Bolton embarked on a quest for good German beer, using good German sports cars to shuttle him around the Great State of Texas. Starting in Dallas, the crew moves about until they end up in Shiner, Texas, where they chat with long-time brewmaster Jimmy Mauric.
If roadtrips were eligible for awards, this Texas Porsche beer run would be an early front-runner for Best of 2011. Head over to Autoweek to read about the trip, and be sure to check out the video as well.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Remembers His Father in His Own Way

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The white No. 3 decals are no bigger than a fist and sit just above and behind the driver's side window of all the Richard Childress Racing team's Chevrolets. Crew members wore black baseball caps with the same No. 3 logo and driver Tony Stewart strolled through the Daytona International Speedway garage Friday afternoon clutching one of the prized caps himself.
Friday marked exactly 10 years since the driver of the Richard Childress Racing No. 3, seven-time NASCAR champion Dale Earnhardt, was killed in Turn 4 of this track after crashing on the last lap of the Daytona 500. The speedway will remember the NASCAR icon with a moment of silence and fans will hold up three fingers on the third lap of Sunday's Daytona 500.
But for such an overwhelming event, it has been a subdued, subtle and suiting anniversary.
For the past week, Earnhardt's competitors, teammates and friends have shared emotional stories about that fateful Sunday afternoon. But the one person you won't see participate in any contrived memorial this weekend is Earnhardt's son, Dale Jr. No hat, no decal. None necessary.
"I'd personally rather just watch it and stand on the sidelines,'' Earnhardt said of the various tributes and memorials planned for the weekend.
"It's more fun for me hearing how other people reflect, hearing other people's stories. I know how I feel in my heart and I don't feel a real need to discuss that a lot.
"I want to do what's right and honor him, but I don't need to do it in front of a bunch of people. I feel like he carries his own weight and he doesn't need me being a part of the celebration or whatever you want to call it. I don't want to take away from it in any way.''

Formula 1 teams will back the decision made by Bernie Ecclestone and the FIA over whether the under-threat Bahrain Grand Prix will take place, according to Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. The 2011 season opener, scheduled to be held on March 13, is in doubt because of unrest in Bahrain - which forced this weekend's GP2 Asia race to be canned. To most people, two may be company, but three's a crowd. If you're looking for real performance, though, a little menage-a-trois could be just what the proverbial doctor ordered. Case in point: Mercedes AMG, Ducati and the Cigarette Racing Team. One makes muscle-bound automobiles, the other some of the fastest sport bikes in the business, while the third makes speed boats that'll outrun just about anything on the water. Strange bedfellows? We'd call them kindred spirits, and they've all jumped in to bed together.
AMG and Ducati, as you may recall, shacked up together in Los Angeles last year when they announced their partnership in the MotoGP series. AMG partnered in similar fashion with the Cigarette Racing Team in Miami, where they presented a special liveried offshore racing boat at the 2010 Miami International Boat Show. Now the nautical equivalent of the Detroit Auto Show is coming around again, but this time it's Ducati and Cigarette that are getting wet, and this is their love-child.
In the place of the 2,700-horsepower 46-foot AMG version from last year, the Cigarette 42X Ducati Edition is a 42-foot speed boat with a pair of 1,100hp Mercury Racing engines capable of speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour. That's fast no matter which way you look at it, but on the open water it's insanity in fiberglass. Cigarette says it's included a number of innovative new features in the boat's design, but Ducati's participation seems largely confined to the badass paint scheme. Robert Kubica is set to leave the intensive care unit at the Santa Corona hospital following his final operation. Fourteen-Car Crash Comes Early in Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The racing may look different at Daytona, but the big crashes are still around.
Less than 30 laps in to Sunday's Daytona 500, contact between a former Daytona winner, Michael Waltrip, and another car he owns set off a 14-car melee in turn four. Waltrip nudged David Reutimann into a spin on the race's 29th lap to start the incident.
Earlier in the race, Waltrip spun Kyle Busch on lap six -- an incident that managed to miss the rest of the pack.
"They make a quick move and it just spins them out," Waltrip said. "I've been doing this all week and I haven't spun anyone out. I'm involved in both of them and I don't know what I could have done different."
The crash collected several of the race's likely contenders, including reigning five-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson as well as his teammates Jeff Gordon and Mark Martin.

Di Resta hopes for Force India progress

Team Lotus hits back at Proton
Team Lotus has hit back at Proton after the Malaysian car maker claimed the team had asked for a big sum of money to end their naming rights dispute. As the public war of words continued between the two parties, Lotus issued a statement on Friday revoking claims from Proton, which had claimed in another statement on Thursday that Team Lotus boss Tony Fernandes had asked for up to £37 million to settle the naming row. "The statement contained a number of factual errors that are at best misleading and at worst straight lies," said Lotus on Friday about Proton's claims.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s Daytona 500 pole-winning Chevy was involved in a crash Wednesday afternoon and sustained enough damage that the team had to go to a back-up car and will now have to start both Thursday's Gatorade Duel qualifying race and Sunday's Daytona 500 from the back of the field instead of from the front.
Earnhardt's No. 88 AMP Energy Chevy was riding second in a two-car draft behind Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson when they slowed to avoid traffic. The two cars behind them -- Martin Truex Jr. and Brian Vickers --- didn't react quickly enough and Truex hit Earnhardt from behind, sending both cars into the inside wall.
Because of the unique qualifying format for the Daytona 500, only the two fastest cars officially "qualified" for the 500 during Sunday's time trials -- polewinner Earnhardt and second fastest Jeff Gordon. NASCAR rules state that if a driver has to switch from the car he qualified in, then he must drop to the rear of the field for the green flag. When that happens, the third place starter -- which will be determined in Thursday's Gatorade Duel 150-mile qualifying race -- will move up into the first position alongside Gordon for the start of the Daytona 500.
Earnhardt, who had won his first career superspeedway pole, said he had a bad feeling about even running in the rain-delayed practice Wednesday.
"We've got the pole-sitting race car, we didn't need practice,'' an obviously frustrated Earnhardt said, 'I had a fast car and I didn't want to practice it.
"I had a bad feeling about it and we come running up on some guys that didn't have their heads on straight and got into an accident.''
And now, "Get the next one ready,'' he said shaking his head.

Chevrolet MyLink brings the app fight to Ford Sync, Toyota Entune

General Motors is finally bringing the smartphone battle to Ford with the introduction of Chevrolet MyLink, an integrated infotainment system that connects to your smartphone and allows you to access apps through either the steering wheel controls or the console-mounted touchscreen.
The wraps officially came off at tonight's Engadget Show and boasts similar functionality to Ford's AppLink and Toyota's recently revealed Entune system. MyLink connects your Android or Blackberry device over Bluetooth, allowing you to wirelessly access apps. And if you're partial to Apple's iOS devices - namely the iPhone or iPod Touch - you get the same functionality, but can only be controlled by plugging it in via USB.
At launch, MyLink is only compatible with Stitcher and Pandora radio, with other apps due to be released later this year. The Chevrolet Volt and Equinox will be the first two models to come equipped with the new system, and in addition to voice-control functionality courtesy of Nuance, both models will be available with PowerMat's inductive charging system, so you don't have to worry about your Bluetooth-tethered phone running out of juice. Pricing hasn't been announced yet, but expect MyLink to be available within the next few months. Rendered Speculation: Bentley looking to expand with entry coupe, crossover?

Rumors continue to swirl that incoming Bentley boss Wolfgang Dürheimer, who previously served as head of research and development at Porsche, is looking long and hard at how to expand the luxury marque's product line. Considering Dürheimer's experience making magic happen at Porsche, it seems likely that Bentley would tap into the platform used for the Panamera sedan, and that's exactly what the blokes from Auto Express are suggesting.The first new model may be an ultra-luxe machine that would fit into the burgeoning four-door-coupe segment. If so, expect a price tag in the mid-$250,000 range and engine choices ranging from the tried-and-true W12 to a new turbocharged 4.0-liter V8.
Those powertrains may also find their way into the engine bay of a Bentley crossover, says Auto Express. As much as some may protest, a Porsche Cayenne-based Bentley with a price near the $200K mark would seem a very real possibility... as would an optional diesel engine, which would be new territory for the brand.
Finally, the long-rumored entry-level (can anything with a $150,000 price tag be called entry-level?) Bentley coupe that would slot below the Continental GT is still a talking point. Branching out into any or all of these segments are seen as a way to get back to the 10,000-unit peak sales year of 2007, as compared to just 4,616 units in 2009.
