Servia confident in Lotus engine
Oriol Servia says he has no concerns about Lotus's IndyCar engine programme, despite the manufacturer running several months behind its rivals in terms of preparation. A Lotus-powered car hit the track for the first time just over a week ago, with Simona de Silvestro and HVM Racing undertaking the early test duties. Lotus's trackside operations director Alan Permane said Kimi Raikkonen proved on his first day back in a Formula 1 cockpit that his return to grand prix racing can be a success. Ecclestone still confident over Bahrain
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone says there are no doubts in his head that the Bahrain Grand Prix will take place this year - despite ongoing question marks about its future. With reports of continued political trouble still appearing in the media, there has been speculation that the event could face a repeat of the scenario 12 months ago when it had to be cancelled. But Ecclestone is adamant that the race, which is scheduled to take place on April 22, will go ahead because he does not see any issue with events going on in the Gulf state
Report: Nürburgring lap days fast becoming a thing of the past
It may as well be on The List, because lapping the infamous Nordschleife at the Nürburgring is one of those rights of passage for so many driving enthusiasts around the world. It's also increasingly becoming the go-to test track for automakers big and small. But those two things may in the end become mutually exclusive.
The root of the problem appears to be a lack of funding for the Nürburgring. The famous public race track in the Eifel hills of Germany is publicly owned but privately managed, and the books have - push come to shove - just not balanced out recently. In an effort to turn a profit, Nürburgring Automotive has tried turning it into a tourist attraction, but with the expensive Ring˚Werk complex still weighing down the books and the number of tourists it was supposed to attract still not coming out to the track's remote part of the German countryside, management is apparently changing tracks. (Figuratively speaking, anyway.)
The result is that the latest calendar released by Nürburgring Automotive has fewer and fewer slots open for "tourist drivers" to come lap the Ring. That's because the circuit is being rented out more and more to automakers, who undertake development work there and pay more consistently than random ticket sales from enthusiasts. There's still plenty of weekend openings available, but those - as Autoweek correspondent Davey Johnson points out - typically much busier than the now-elusive weekday slots.
At the end of the day, we can hardly blame anyone in specific. The enthusiasts pay handsomely and take considerable risks to do what they love. The automakers pay more in search of the bragging rights and the taut chassis setups we all clamor for. Nürburgring Automotive, for its part, needs to balance the books if the Nordschleife is to stay open at all. But the bottom line is that the days of showing up in Eifel and lapping the vaunted Green Hell may be drawing to a close, and that's just a shame.

Sebastien Loeb wins Monte Carlo Rally
Sebastien Loeb of France got off to a strong start in his bid for a record ninth world title by winning the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally on Sunday. The eight-time world champion completed the 18-stage race in 4 hours, 32 minutes, 39.9 seconds. Daniel Sordo of Spain took second place, 28.6 seconds ahead of Petter Solberg of Norway.

The Mini Rocketman (we'll spare you the Elton John lyrics) was one of our favorite concepts from the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Sure, the name is silly, but this pint-sized concept showed what could be in store for an even more mini Mini. A smarter Smart, if you will. However, a new report from CAR states that the entry-level Mini project has allegedly been canned. The Rocketman as we know it has been grounded.
The reason? CAR reports that it would be a costly endeavor to develop the Rocketman to meet street-legal specifications; specifically, handling, stability and crash standards. The concept only measures in at 134.6 inches long - a full 12 inches shorter than a standard Cooper hatchback, and while Mini insiders said that a production version could come as early as 2016, there are now no plans to offer a vehicle smaller than the current Cooper.

Ducati’s GP12 makes track debut
Ducati has completed the first test of its 2012 MotoGP contender, the GP12. Reigning World Superbike champion, and former MotoGP rider, Carlos Checa was called up for three days of running at Jerez this week, joined by test rider Franco Battaini. Rider: BBC should show more racing
Steve Rider has called on the BBC to broadcast more top-level motorsport in a bid to boost its diminished coverage of Formula 1 this year. Rider, who has fronted F1 broadcasts for both the BBC and ITV in the past, will form part of Sky's line-up when its contract to broadcast all grands prix live in the UK commences this year. He believes that it is time for the BBC to support top domestic and international championships, such as world rallying and British Formula 3, to make up for losing its deal to show full live coverage of the F1 season to Sky this year.

Peterhansel on brink of Dakar win
Stephane Peterhansel is on the verge of a 10th Dakar Rally victory - and his fourth in the car category - after winning the penultimate stage of the 2012 event and stretching his overall lead to 42 minutes with just Sunday's short finale stage to go. The relentlessly unconventional Mini Cooper looks to be going a lot less unconventional for its third generation, at least on the inside. A glimpse of what appears to be Mini's future was snapped by KGP Photography in the Arctic Circle, and outside, there looks to be little change except for slightly larger dimensions. Inside, though, the giant-speedo-and-toggle-switch IP looks to be binned in favor of a soberly BMW-esque dash cluster and horizontally laid-out central console.
If this interior is accurate and not just an elaborate - and expensive - engineering mule bait-and-switch, then it signals a rather marked change in the Mini way of life. The theories of why it might be the real deal are, again, the testing expense, the expectation that the Mini will get a BMW 1 Series GT brother and the platform sharing necessitated more commonalities, or that designers might simply be over the still-unique first- and second-generation interior design (a retro-minded setup that both delights and enrages with its haphazard ergonomics). What's every bit as likely, however, is that this isn't a Mini at all - it's a next-gen 1 Series wrapped in a Mini mule shell.

Houston police catch man in "Dukes of Hazzard" style Charger after high-speed chase

A Houston, Texas, man is likely out of his freedom and his General Lee-style Dodge Charger following a police chase. According to news reports from Houston, police clocked the man going 120 mph on a city freeway.
To catch him, police had to run his plate through their database, which led them to his apartment. When the cops showed up, the guy was taking a shower as if everything was normal.
Evading the police at 120 mph is something the Duke Boys' Charger is likely used to. This time, though, the big orange Dodge's owner was hauling marijuana, not moonshine. It's been impounded, and charges are pending.

WRC timing firm to miss Monte Carlo
The World Rally Championship's expert timing firm Stage One Technology will not be in Monte Carlo for next week's season-opener after it was unable to find agreement with the administrators of North One Sports.
