The Mini Rocketman (we'll spare you the Elton John lyrics) was one of our favorite concepts from the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Sure, the name is silly, but this pint-sized concept showed what could be in store for an even more mini Mini. A smarter Smart, if you will. However, a new report from CAR states that the entry-level Mini project has allegedly been canned. The Rocketman as we know it has been grounded.
The reason? CAR reports that it would be a costly endeavor to develop the Rocketman to meet street-legal specifications; specifically, handling, stability and crash standards. The concept only measures in at 134.6 inches long - a full 12 inches shorter than a standard Cooper hatchback, and while Mini insiders said that a production version could come as early as 2016, there are now no plans to offer a vehicle smaller than the current Cooper.

Ducati’s GP12 makes track debut
Ducati has completed the first test of its 2012 MotoGP contender, the GP12. Reigning World Superbike champion, and former MotoGP rider, Carlos Checa was called up for three days of running at Jerez this week, joined by test rider Franco Battaini. Conditions were cold but dry throughout the sessions, allowing Ducati to get through its full planned programme.

Loeb extends lead on 3rd day of Monte Carlo Rally
Eight-time world champion Sebastien Loeb has extended his lead on the third day of the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally, with Daniel Sordo pulling ahead of Petter Solberg for second. Rider: BBC should show more racing
Steve Rider has called on the BBC to broadcast more top-level motorsport in a bid to boost its diminished coverage of Formula 1 this year. Rider, who has fronted F1 broadcasts for both the BBC and ITV in the past, will form part of Sky's line-up when its contract to broadcast all grands prix live in the UK commences this year. He believes that it is time for the BBC to support top domestic and international championships, such as world rallying and British Formula 3, to make up for losing its deal to show full live coverage of the F1 season to Sky this year.

Peterhansel on brink of Dakar win
Stephane Peterhansel is on the verge of a 10th Dakar Rally victory - and his fourth in the car category - after winning the penultimate stage of the 2012 event and stretching his overall lead to 42 minutes with just Sunday's short finale stage to go. With a 20-minute cushion despite getting stuck in sand dunes yesterday, Peterhansel had not intended to push hard on today's run from Nasca to Pisco, but ended up winning the stage almost by accident as all his nearest rivals bogged down in the tough terrain.

Spy Shots: 3rd-gen Mini Cooper spy shots suggest retro-free interior

The relentlessly unconventional Mini Cooper looks to be going a lot less unconventional for its third generation, at least on the inside. A glimpse of what appears to be Mini's future was snapped by KGP Photography in the Arctic Circle, and outside, there looks to be little change except for slightly larger dimensions. Inside, though, the giant-speedo-and-toggle-switch IP looks to be binned in favor of a soberly BMW-esque dash cluster and horizontally laid-out central console.
If this interior is accurate and not just an elaborate - and expensive - engineering mule bait-and-switch, then it signals a rather marked change in the Mini way of life. The theories of why it might be the real deal are, again, the testing expense, the expectation that the Mini will get a BMW 1 Series GT brother and the platform sharing necessitated more commonalities, or that designers might simply be over the still-unique first- and second-generation interior design (a retro-minded setup that both delights and enrages with its haphazard ergonomics). What's every bit as likely, however, is that this isn't a Mini at all - it's a next-gen 1 Series wrapped in a Mini mule shell.

Houston police catch man in "Dukes of Hazzard" style Charger after high-speed chase

A Houston, Texas, man is likely out of his freedom and his General Lee-style Dodge Charger following a police chase. According to news reports from Houston, police clocked the man going 120 mph on a city freeway.
To catch him, police had to run his plate through their database, which led them to his apartment. When the cops showed up, the guy was taking a shower as if everything was normal.
Evading the police at 120 mph is something the Duke Boys' Charger is likely used to. This time, though, the big orange Dodge's owner was hauling marijuana, not moonshine. It's been impounded, and charges are pending.

WRC timing firm to miss Monte Carlo

Back in October, AutoblogGreen reported that the all-electric crossover from Tesla, the Model X, would be revealed ahead of the 2012 Detroit Auto Show? Well, scratch that. That information was, apparently, inaccurate. Dubitable. Counterfactual even. Instead, it seems that February 9 marks the day the X is to be spotted.
The news comes courtesy of the enthusiasts over at the Tesla Motor Club forum. A member read in a recent copy of Barclays Capital research report that the Tesla's design studio in LA would be the setting for the Model X reveal. AutoblogGreen contacted Tesla to confirm, and was told that, "Yes, there will be a February 9th Model X event."
The upcoming reveal won't have been its first, however. The vehicle was shown to some institutional investor types just before Christmas and, going by a handful of tweets that went out across the internetz shortly thereafter, they were impressed. Quicker than a Porsche 911 and roomier than an Audi Q7, they say. Throw in all-wheel drive and this could get pretty interesting.

With only eight of 12 race weeks counting in the standings, the rankings in both Pontiac Solstice and SpecRacer Ford are unlikely to change in the coming weeks unless drivers significantly improve their performance. As he did last year, Michael Booth topped all Solstice drivers, but this time he shared the lead with Wim Bries as both sim racers tallied 130 points on the week. Official: Volvo plugging XC60 hybrid concept in Detroit

With the new year in full swing and the Detroit Auto Show now just days away, the new debuts have been rolling in. And here we have Volvo's centerpiece for the rapidly approaching auto expo: the Volvo XC60 Plug-in Hybrid Concept.
Based, as you might have guessed, on the production XC60 crossover, this technological concept packs a similar drivetrain to the V60 Plug-in Hybrid that just entered production. While its stouter counterpart utilizes a diesel to fill out the internal-combustion side of the hybrid equation, the XC60 concept packs a gasoline engine: those front wheels are driven by a 280-horsepower turbo four coupled to an eight-speed automatic transmission, with a 70hp electric motor driving the rear wheels for through-the-road all-wheel drive.
The result is what Volvo stretches to claim is a 100 mpg fuel economy rating in hybrid mode, 35 miles on electric propulsion alone, or a 0-60 time of 5.8 seconds using the battery as a booster.
