Report: UAW contract confirms larger 5.8L V8 for GT500

Shelby GT500 Super Snake

Fans of large displacement and forced induction (isn't that everyone?) can officially rejoice today as the recently approved deal between Ford and the United Auto Workers has answered a question that's been on our minds ever since Chevrolet upped the horsepower ante with its Camaro ZL1. Yes, folks, the 2013 Shelby GT500 will be blessed with a 5.8-liter supercharged V8 engine.

While conventional wisdom has always been that the easiest way to increase horsepower and torque was to bore-and-stroke your way to more displacement, an interesting series of spy shots showing one conspicuously oversize intercooler led some to believe Ford was ditching the supercharger in favor of twin turbos. Not so, apparently. Ford's latest contract with the UAW reveals that its Romeo Engine Assembly Plant will receive a $50 million investment to build the 5.8L supercharged mill.

Naturally, contract talk doesn't include a whiff on horsepower or torque, but you can bet Ford is planning on eking out more than the 580 horses that Chevy has corralled from the 2012 Camaro ZL1. Something around 600 seems like a safe bet, but we'll just have to wait for an official announcement from Ford. In the meantime, sweet supercharged dreams.

Aerotropolis: A New Model for Cities?

Imagine a city where the airport is not located at the urban periphery but in the center of the city. All other facets of commerce and life flow from that central point, the city’s economic nucleus.

Kenseth starts Chase from pole

Matt Kenseth claimed his second pole position of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season in qualifying for Sunday's opening Chase round at Chicagoland Speedway. The Roush Fenway Racing driver confirmed the recent upturn in his qualifying form by posting a fastest lap of 29.469 seconds at an average speed of 183.243 mph, which bumped his team-mate Greg Biffle from pole and then held up as the benchmark for the rest of the session. Kenseth, who starts the Chase from fourth place as the top ranked Ford driver, has now qualified among the top 10 nine times this season but most encouragingly, his last six top-10 starts have resulted in equally solid finishes

Dixon quickest in practice two

Scott Dixon led his team-mate Dario Franchitti in a Ganassi one-two in the first of Saturday's IndyCar practice sessions at Motegi. Dixon left it late, setting a 1m38.7710s with one of the final laps of the morning and beating Franchitti by a relatively comfortable 0.3976 seconds in a session where the entire 26-car field was covered by 1.6s. Franchitti had been in front since deposing title rival Will Power (Penske) in the early stages.

brandon wright says thanks to saviors

Brandon Wright is the lucky young man who was plucked from beneath the potential tomb of a burning BMW that we told you about earlier this week. Wright's motorcycle collided with the German sedan and it wound up on top of him. Luckily, a group of bystanders banded together and lifted the fiery car, with another bystander then pulling Wright out of harm's way. Now recovering in a hospital, Wright has gone in front of the cameras to thank those that kept him alive.

Wright calls the men and women heroes for putting their lives on the line to save his. He states that he is "forever in debt," and that he "can't thank them enough." Wright, who wasn't wearing a helmet at the time of his crash, goes on to say that he plans to wear the protective gear from here on out.

The young motorcyclist suffered a fractured pelvis, broken leg and burns to one of his feet. Doctors say it will take Wright several months to fully recover. Click past the jump to watch the video with more of his story.
