Renault feels vindicated by podium
Renault boss Eric Boullier has admitted to a sense of relief at seeing his team start the season with a podium finish - following the gamble it took on forward exhausts and the loss of Robert Kubica. Vitaly Petrov's third placed finish in Australia was one of the major surprises of the weekend – and proved that Boullier's faith in his design team and in re-signing the Russian driver was well placed. Speaking about his feelings after the result, Boullier said: "I am proud, happy and relieved.
Hamilton thrilled with team’s progress
Lewis Hamilton hailed his second place in the Australian Grand Prix as a 'great achievement' for McLaren given its poor winter testing form and last-minute redesign. Following a build-up during which it looked unlikely to even break into the top 10, McLaren shelved its radical exhaust system and brought a new exhaust and floor to Melbourne for the season-opener. That transformed its performance, and Hamilton was able to qualify and finish second in Australia, while his team-mate Jenson Button started fourth and came home sixth following a penalty

Loeb slams Hirvonen over delay
Sebastien Loeb accused Mikko Hirvonen of deliberately delaying him when the Ford rejoined after changing a puncture on SS9 in Portugal. Hirvonen had to change the tyre on the Vascao stage, leaving him two minutes off his rally-leading team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala. The Ford rejoined as soon as the new tyre was fitted, and Hirvonen felt he was far enough ahead of Loeb not to hold the Citroen up - but the Frenchman vehemently disageed.

Di Resta: Result above expectations
Paul di Resta said his 14th place in Melbourne qualifying was better than he had expected for his first grand prix, and believes a return to the top 10 is not far away for Force India. The team's testing form had been disappointing, with di Resta's team-mate Adrian Sutil openly admitting that Force India had not made the progress it had hoped for over the winter.

Ogier on course for Portugal win
Sebastien Ogier is cruising towards a second consecutive Rally of Portugal victory with two stages to go. After Ford's problems yesterday allowed the two Citroens to make a break, Ogier and Sebastien Loeb have gone into conservative mode for the final leg and are driving steadily to the finish 36 seconds apart. "Absolutely no pushing, just focus on the pace notes and that is it for today," said Ogier.

Barrichello positive over fresh tyres
Rubens Barrichello hopes that his chances of recovering into the points in the Australian Grand Prix are boosted by the fact that he has several sets of brand new tyres left. The Brazilian threw away the chance to fight for a top ten place in qualifying when he spun early on in Q2, which has left him 17th on the grid for the season-opener. But despite being disappointed at the error that put him out, Barrichello thinks that the fact he has three sets of new tyres left for the race - as he did not run in Q2 or Q3 – could yet be a boost.

Vettel storms to Melbourne pole
Sebastian Vettel started his world championship defence in imperious form by dominating qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix. The Red Bull driver was comfortably quickest in Q1 and Q2, then 0.8 seconds ahead of the rest of the field after the first Q3 runs were complete. That 1m23.529s effort was sufficient to secure the 16th pole of Vettel's Formula 1 career, though he ended the session with a 1m23.6s for good measure - also quicker than anyone else could manage

iRacer Cassill Takes Over for Elliott
iRacer and NASCAR driver Landon Cassill will take over driving duties for Phoenix Racing beginning at Auto Club Speedway this weekend. Cassill, 21, replaces 1988 NASCAR Cup champion Bill Elliott, who started the first four races of the season in the No. 09 Chevrolet. “Hopefully, I can do good enough to keep the car in the top 35 (in points) and even in the top 25,” Cassill said. Video: Unexplained Mazda violence in Russia

You know those cranes that you see at many large grocery stores? You know, the ones with the shiny, pointy claws that can't seem to pick up a teddy bear or some fuzzy dice. They're infuriating to use, mostly because you know you just got duped into paying fifty cents for something that you just can't win. They have the same claws in Russia, and apparently they're infinitely larger, more functional and far more hostile towards the Mazda6.
Beyond the jump is some video that we just can't explain. It involves a massive, absolutely awesome crane truck grabbing onto the roofs of a pair of perfectly good-looking Mazdas and simply tossing them into an equally huge bin attached to said truck.
We have no idea why these Mazdas were taken in such a hostile manner, but we're hoping it's not because they were parked in a loading zone. And why is it that we can only see Mazdas in this parking lot? So many questions. So much destruction. (We're guessing these cars were somehow damaged and destroyed for insurance purposes, but we can't say for sure.)

Champions dismiss driver overload fears
Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher have dismissed fears that drivers could become distracted by the amount of time spent operating systems such as KERS and the adjustable rear wings on their steering wheels in 2011. Latvala keen for better Portugal form
Ford driver Jari-Matti Latvala is aiming to stay out of trouble on next week's Rally of Portugal as the Finn aims to end his difficult run on the Faro-based event. The 25-year-old has crashed his Ford out of the rally for the last two years, with his 2009 accident reckoned to be one of the biggest in the sport, when he destroyed his Focus by rolling 17 times down a mountainside.
Lorenzo encouraged by pace
MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo was not downcast about finishing Qatar Grand Prix qualifying 0.8 seconds off the Hondas' pace, as he had expected to be even further adrift. The Yamaha rider had been very concerned about his bike's performance in the final winter test at the start of this week, and ruled out a shot at Losail victory. So he considered third place and the pace in qualifying he had shown to be a very encouraging result

Corvettes complete World GT1 field
The 2011 GT1 World Championship grid has been completed with the announcement that four Corvettes will be in the field, run under the DKR Engineering and Exim Bank Team China banners, bringing the entry up to 20 cars. A series of team pull-outs at the end of the 2010 season had led to a busy winter of rearranging to ensure that a full grid could be provided for 2011. Under World GT1 rules, each sportscar brand must be represented by a pair of two-car teams.

Lorenzo hails practice breakthrough
Jorge Lorenzo declared himself much happier with his Yamaha after Thursday practice in Qatar, even though he was only seventh. Week Eight of Season One of the Red Sox Racing League’s 2011 schedule saw league members basking in the warmth of sunny south Florida for the 29 lap “Hurricane Hunters Grand Prix” at Homestead Miami Speedway’s Road Course B. The track’s high speed 2.3 mile layout includes enough of the speedway section to lull the sim racers into a false sense of security as they reach speeds of 190+ mph before they dive into the infield to begin the eleven challenging corners. Neal quickest at Snetterton test
Matt Neal set the pace as several British Touring Car Championship teams took part in an unofficial test session at Snetterton on Tuesday. Many of the teams were running on the new '300' layout that will be used for August's BTCC round for the first time, and they had to wait longer than anticipated to take to the track as dense fog caused the morning session to be delayed for an hour. Once the on-track action did commence, it was Mat Jackson who set the pace in his Motorbase Ford, although his 1m59.233s lap that was the best of the morning, was not good enough to keep him on top during the afternoon as times reduced by around half a second.

Most would view a sport-ute like the Range Rover Sport as luxurious enough already, but for those who disagree, Land Rover has debuted a new special edition.
Called the Luxury edition, it slots in between the HSE and Autobiography editions. It's distinguished by such special touches as a sun roof, heated steering wheel, contrast-stitched leather trim and a Harman/Kardon audio system. It's available in Europe exclusively with the 245-horsepower, 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, and can be ordered in white, black or bronze, offset by black trim and 20-inch wheels.
Pricing reportedly comes in at a princely €110,000 - equivalent to about $150k. Have a closer look in the gallery below.

Toyota is putting its full backing behind the JTGrey Racing Lexus LX 570 again this year as the team looks for a repeat in the 2011 SCORE Stock Full Championship. Last year, driver Joe Bacal piloted a very similar LX 570 to the overall championship.
This version of the LX 570 proves you can turn just about anything into a SCORE truck and instantly make it 100 percent cooler. This LX sport-ute has been permanently relieved of soccer practice and Whole Foods duty, and now sports a healthy lift and 37-inch rollers to keep the vitals off the ground.
In last year's championship, Bacal drove the 5.7-liter V8-powered LX to victory at the Las Vegas 300, the San Felipe 250, the Baja 1000 Races and nabbed second in the Baja 500. Bacal's 2011 season started this past weekend at the SCORE Mastercraft San Felipe 250, but Bacal finished outside the points. The next round of the season runs from June 3-5 at the Baja 500. Top Gear could be set to welcome royalty into the driver's seat of its reasonably priced Kia Cee'd. Prince Harry is reportedly eager to get behind the wheel and tackle the Top Gear test track in the next series of the popular BBC franchise, where he will attempt to best the 1:44.2 lap time set by Tom Cruise.
Prince Harry is used to handling high-speed machines, but they're typically of the airborne variety. He recently completed military training that qualifies him to fly Apache helicopters. The top speed of an Apache is listed at 182 miles per hour - a few ticks quicker than the Kia.
