Report: Cadillac likely to approve flagship, more hybrid models

According to The Detroit Bureau, Cadillac is aiming to produce a new high-end flagship on the massive Omega platform. The news comes in the wake of the exuberant public reaction to the company's Ciel Concept, and General Motors says that a hard-top version of the lengthy convertible is already in the works. We may see that concept in as little as a few months. While General Motors is being fairly tight-lipped about the vehicle's actual production schedule, The Detroit Bureau reports that the new Omega may land in dealerships by 2015 at the latest.
But that's not the only news from Cadillac. The company has also made it clear that buyers can expect to be able to snap up a range of hybrid vehicles from the luxury automaker. While that includes efforts like the upcoming Volt-based ELR, the brand intends to flex its tech muscles with multiple hybrid technologies in the near future. The Detroit Bureau hypothesizes that Cadillac may dabble in incredibly efficient vehicles as well as high-performance hybrids similar to what Porsche is currently producing.

Newly-crowned GP2 champion Romain Grosjean says he is not focusing on trying to race for Renault in Formula 1 before the end of the season. Richie Stanaway will make his GP3 Series debut at Spa this weekend after signing a two-race deal with reigning champion team ART Grand Prix. The 19-year-old New Zealander won last year's ADAC Formel Masters title and currently leads the German F3 championship after winning nine times already in his maiden season in the category. Report: Canadian researcher working on making car plastics from mad cow parts?

A researcher with the University of Alberta may have found a way to keep cattle waste products out of landfills. David Bressler, an associate professor with the institution's Department of Agricultural, Food and Nutritional Science began working to find uses for beef parts contaminated with mad cow disease after the Canadian beef industry was struck with the illness in 2003.
Now Bressler has found a way to use the parts to create plastics that may find their way into vehicle cabins. The process uses proteins derived from infected cow skulls, brains, nerves, eyes, tonsils and spinal cords (ick) that are currently banned from any use at all for fear of spreading infection.
The University of Alberta has a special permit to handle the proteins. By using high temperatures to break down the proteins, Bressler was then able to re-link them with other molecules to create the plastics. The material will need to go through all of the necessary regulatory trials, but its creator hopes to see the plastic in car interiors in as little as 12 months.

Kyle Busch grabs Chase spot with win
Kyle Busch held off reigning champion Jimmie Johnson in a green-white-chequered finish at Michigan to clinch a spot in this year's NASCAR Sprint Cup Chase. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver claimed the lead from his Hendrick Motorsports rival, who had been up front since the penultimate restart with 13 laps remaining, thanks to a timely final pitstop right before the last caution that placed him ahead once the frontrunners pitted for the last time. Johnson initially took advantage of the battle for second place following the penultimate restart but as Busch was able to get the better of Hendrick's Jeff Gordon and Roush Fenway's Matt Kenseth in the battle for second place, he quickly started eating into Johnson's lead.

I was cleaning out my office a few days ago and under the mounds of paperwork an old memory was revived. I found my collection of old racing games and simulators from years ago. I flipped through the pages of some of the manuals and read the system requirements and kind of chuckled. Back in the day, 16MB of ram and a 1MB video card were considered state of the art, and hooking a steering wheel to the computer made your house the local hangout for everyone. Then, I got to the back of some of these manuals and started reading the credits. Some of the names from 15 years ago are still involved in sim racing development. Russian driver Sigacev in WTCC outing
Russian driver David Sigacev will join the World Touring Car Championship field for the next round at Valencia. The 22-year-old will race a third Engstler BMW run entered under the DeTeam KK Motorsport banner, alongside team regulars Franz Engstler and Kristian Poulsen. Sigacev presently races in the ADAC GT Master series in Germany.
Illini Mighty at Michigan
Illinois sim racer Brandon Buchberger flexed his muscle during Week Two as he took the overall win in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (NiCCS) at Michigan International Speedway. Over 2000 sim racers took to the track, but it was a win on August 14th that put Buchberger over the top for the victory. Buchberger bagged the win to take home 236 points. With an sof rating pegged at a 3770, the winner led just seven laps in the highly competitive race which featured a total of 21 lead changes over the 80 lap duration. Gascoyne confident of midfield spot

Hunter-Reay says win still satisfying
Ryan Hunter-Reay said his first win of the season at New Hampshire was still satisfying despite the confusing circumstances in which it was finally confirmed. Having assumed control of the race following Dario Franchitti's crash, Hunter-Reay led the field at the final, controversial restart but lost out to Oriol Servia and Scott Dixon after a poor initial getaway. He then had to wait in the pit-lane as race officials pondered whether to reset the race or restart for the final five laps, before finally being confirmed as the winner as - much to Servia's chargrin - they elected to finish the race using each driver's position prior to the wet restart

Button to demo F1 car in Manchester
Jenson Button will drive a McLaren Formula 1 car through the streets of Manchester later this month as part of a three-day festival in the British city. The 2009 world champion's run will take place at 11am on Monday, August 29 from Albert square, which will also be the setting for an F1 fan zone run by team sponsor Vodafone, and through the Deansgate area. "Driving an F1 car through Manchester is going to be a unique experience for me," Button said.

Gibbs, Toyota join forces for 2012
Joe Gibbs Racing and Toyota Racing Development will join forces in a single engine programme to build NASCAR Toyota units from 2012. Power/Franchitti tension simmers on
Tension between IndyCar Series championship rivals Dario Franchitti and Will Power continued to simmer in Mid-Ohio after the pair made contact again on the opening lap of the race. Relations between the two had already turned sour in July after Power suggested that Franchitti should have received a penalty for tipping him in to a spin at Toronto - the Scot going on to win the race. Franchitti then accused Power of trying to do the same thing on the first lap of the race at Mid-Ohio on Sunday as the pair fought over third position.

Hopkins happily back in the rhythm
MotoGP returnee John Hopkins was delighted to have been able to find a rhythm on his first competitive day back on the Suzuki since Jerez in May. The 28-year-old American ended the first day's practice for the Czech MotoGP just 0.023s seconds slower than his team-mate Alvaro Bautista, having set the 10th fastest time overall. "It's been a big culture shock today, the most elite riders in the world are all packed in the MotoGP field, but it has still been a good day for us," said Hopkins.
Plato leads Cruze one-two in Race 1
Jason Plato led a works Chevrolet Cruze one-two in the first British Touring Car race on the Snetterton 300 circuit on Sunday. Perez expects much stronger 2012
Sergio Perez is confident he will have a much stronger second season in Formula 1 next year after a solid debut campaign with Sauber. Perez, the first Mexican Formula 1 driver in nearly 30 years, has enjoyed a strong first half of the season with the Swiss squad, having scored eight points so far. The rookie is optimistic, however, that he will be able to build on his first year in Formula 1 to be much better in 2012, both on and off the track.

Plato claims last-gasp pole
Jason Plato took a last-gasp pole position in the best qualifying session of the British Touring Car season so far at Snetterton. The battle boiled down to a fight between the works Chevrolet Cruzes and Honda Civics. Official: 2012 Ford Harley-Davidson F-150 arrives, now with more snakeskin
Harley riders like riding Harleys. But even for the HDMC faithful, certain situations - from bad weather to transporting cargo - call for something with a little more utility. That's where the Harley-Davidson edition Ford F-150 comes in.
Since the two iconic American motor companies first teamed up in 1999, the collaboration has produced ten special edition F-150s, six Super Duty F-250 and F-350 models and even an F-450 a couple of years ago. All in, more than 70,000 examples have been sold.
For 2012, Ford has given the Harley-Davidson F-150 a revised interior, a new set of wheels, a new color option and some updated graphics. The interior now features snakeskin accents (which ought to go perfectly with those snakeskin boots yer kickin'). The new wheels are machined aluminum, measure a massive 22 inches across and feature painted accents and new hubs. The White Platinum Tri-Coat pictured above now joins the catalog, along with the new (and relatively subtle) gray flame along the flanks.
The enormous 6.2-liter V8 packs a hefty 411 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque - just a teensy bit more than the V-twin in a Harley hog, and you can read all about the whole package in the press release after the jump and scope it out in the high-res image gallery for more.

India concern over 2012 GP date
Indian motor sport federation president Vicky Chandhok has voiced concerns about the event's proposed April 22 slot on the 2012 Formula 1 calendar which the sport's supremo Bernie Ecclestone submitted to the teams ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend. Following team principals remarks that they are set to ask Ecclestone for a rethink due to the logistical demands of fly-away back-to-back races at the end of the season, Chandhok believes New Dehli's race could also benefit from a change of date due to the country's hot weather at that time of the year.
Ferrari targets Q3 improvement
Ferrari thinks that if it can further improve its form in Q3 then it has the package needed to fight for victory over the remainder of the season. Although Fernando Alonso has been the highest scoring driver in the last four races, the team feels that its chances in the races are being hurt by the fact that Red Bull Racing and McLaren are able to extract more performance in the final dash for grid positions.

Josh Clason (he of the Depth of Speed series) is teaming up with eGarage. Two great flavors that will certainly taste great together. Clason and eGarage plan to bring us plenty of visual automotive delight, and the duo have just realized a teaser clip of what's in store.
Verbally, the pair are mum on what's coming up. The teaser video, however, speaks volumes. We've seen the JDM Legends machines before, but the rest of the video takes on everything from rat rods and lead sleds to modern high-horsepower Bentley coupes. Click past the jump to watch the video.

Ekstrom confirmed for RoC
Three-time Race of Champions maestro Mattias Ekstrom will compete in this year 24th running of the event at Dusseldorf's ESPRIT arena on 3-4 December. Ekstrom, a double DTM champion, has reached at least one final in every year he has competed in the RoC - a run which dates back to 2005, when he and Tom Kristensen took Nations Cup glory for Scandinavia.
