Jay Leno plays around with the cars from Fast Five

Fast Five is the latest in the reinvigorated Fast and Furious franchise, and while the latest film adds Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (along with Paul Walker and Vin Diesel), the real co-stars are, as always, the cars. A whole new batch of wheels debuts in Fast Five, and Jay Leno took a firsthand look at some of them.

Movie car builder Dennis McCarthy brought a C2 Corvette Grand Sport replica, which features a 1980s Corvette suspension and a custom body by Mongoose. While many movie cars feature "fake" power, the Vette still packs 500 horses. And since this Vette was made for movie production, there are another nine copies, two of which sit on Volkswagen platforms to better handle some off-road stunts.

Beyond the Corvetteette, McCarthy brought a 1960s Dodge Charger with a gutted blower and a small-block Chevy underhood. Hit the jump to watch the 10-minute video, which features a few clips from the movie and some behind-the-scenes footage as well. At one point, Jay leaves his garage and heads over to McCarthy's home turf, which shows more metal from Fast Five.

The final race of the iRacing.com V8 Supercar Series Season One 2011 was run and won at the Silverstone National circuit. The Monday Night V8 Supercar sessions have produced some of the most memorable online racing seen on the iRacing simulation, along with capacity fields on an average of three splits for each of the two main Monday evening events. The standard of driving, competing and cameraderie has been exceptional, to the point where the iRacing spectator service has become quite the virtual corporate box. Silverstone National is a short blast for the big Aussie V8s with sub-one minute times. Getting the power down cleanly and preserving the rears is the key. As a side note, your author ran an earlier race and made split 3 with a sixth place. [...]

For the first time this season, the NASCAR iRacing.com Class A Series went road course racing, in wine country, USA, aka Sonoma.  The ten turn, 1.99 mile Cup configuration of Infinion Raceway challenged online racers in ways they never thought possible, and brought new names to the front. Michael Conti led 50 of the 55 laps en route to winning the top split of the week, setting fast time in the process. Conti is known more as an oval racer, but showed his capabilities on road as he took the dominating win by 55 seconds over Neil Pearson. Kenny Humpe was on the grid, and as always a favorite to win, but was unable to connect and failed to complete a lap. PJ Stergios, Marcus Lindsey and Brad Wright were [...]

Unmodified Nissan Leaf entered in Pikes Peak Hill Climb [w/videos]

2011 Nissan Leaf
2011 Nissan Leaf - Click above for high-res image gallery

"With electric automobiles popping up like dandelions across the landscape of American driving, it's no surprise that they will be part of the field at the 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 26."

So says the press release you'll find waiting for your prying eyes after the break. While it's true that we're not exactly surprised that an electric car will make its way up to the top of the historic hill - there was, after all, a dedicated electric vehicle class for 2010 - we are a little curious whether a completely stock Nissan Leaf has any chance of dethroning current EV Hill Climb record holder Ikuo Hanawa of Japan.

Certainly, Leaf driver Chad Hord knows what he's doing, as he currently pilots an off-road racing truck in the TORC series. In any case, we'll find out soon enough if the Leaf's 110 horsepower and 90-mile-per-hour top speed has the stuff to hang with the purpose-built EV racers; Hanawa will again contest the championship in his Concept two-wheel drive 2010 Custom Summit HER-02.

Oh, and about that dandelion thing... those are generally unwanted guests of those who actually care about keeping a lush carpet of green in their yards. Maybe not the way lovers of automotive greenery want to think of their rides, eh? Check out the complete press release after the break for all the details, and spend a few minutes watching Hanawa's record-setting HER-02 do its thing on the Peak.

The 2011 Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale is the regular GranTurismo's crude, hairy-chested brother. It's loud, muscle-bound and doesn't make any apologies. With a 450-horsepower version of Maserati's 4.7 liter V8 under the hood, its got the brawn to back up its big talk.

Despite its unruly demeanor and aerodynamic tweaks to the body, the fastest Maserati also manages to be as drop-dead gorgeous as its tamer stablemate. Now, there's video of Maserati's wild child tearing up the race track. The car looks poised and right at home, and sounds like Lucifer's personal symphony at full blast. For the full five-minute immersion, check out the video after the jump.

Conway charges to first Indy win

Mike Conway claimed his first IndyCar Series race victory with a late charge in Long Beach, despite tumbling down the order with a messy first pitstop. Long-time leader Ryan Briscoe and reigning champion Dario Franchitti had to settle for second and third, ahead of star rookie James Hinchcliffe, while Will Power was only 10th after a tangle with Penske team-mate Helio Castroneves

Briatore says new F1 rules a success

Former Renault boss Flavio Briatore has labelled this year's regulations a success, claiming he has never enjoyed watching racing so much. The Italian was always one of the main backers of radical changes to improve the show in Formula 1, and he has admitted he is pleased with what the rules have achieved so far this year

Report: Formula One's Turkish Grand Prix is on the outs

Bernie Ecclestone mobbed by cameras

Formula One and Turkey are apparently on the splits, as Turkish newspaper Haberturk claims that the Turkish Grand Prix won't take place in 2012. Istanbul chamber of commerce chief Murat Yalcintas reportedly told the publication "It looks like the Formula One race won't be held in Istanbul next year." The reported reason for the decision was that Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone (above) raised the race fee from $13 million to $26 million; a price Istanbul doesn't appear eager to meet.

The paper claims that the reason for the decision has less to do with the rising cost of F1 and more to do with the fact that Ecclestone is interested in a 2012 race in Moscow. F1 has made no formal announcements regarding a foray into Moscow or the future of the Turkey race.

Monras grabs F2 race two pole

Formula 2 rookie Miki Monras will start the second race of the season from pole position after topping second qualifying at Silverstone. The GP3 convert's top spot came courtesy of a 1m49.934s lap - the fastest of the weekend so far - with two minutes of the half-hour session remaining and gave him the first F2 pole for a Spaniard since Andy Soucek at Oschersleben in 2009. With drivers able to use boost in the session (unlike in Q1), times were around a second quicker than they had been 24 hours earlier.

Perez apologises for Sutil collision

Sergio Perez apologised to Adrian Sutil for their collision in the Chinese Grand Prix - though the German said his greater concern was why Force India's tyre wear had been so bad at Shanghai. The late-race clash at the first complex earned Perez a penalty and meant Sutil had to pit for a new front wing, leaving the Force India 15th and the Sauber 17th.

Heidfeld frustrated by Q2 traffic

Nick Heidfeld blamed traffic during his only qualifying run in Q2 for his disappointing position ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix. The German opted to do just one run in the second qualifying segment, but Renault team-mate Vitaly Petrov caused a red flag with two minutes to go because of a problem with his car. The incident meant all drivers were on a mad rush to set a time in the final two minutes, and many found traffic during the flying laps.
