McLaren to investigate pitstop problems

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has promised his drivers there will be a full investigation into its pitstop procedures to ensure that mistakes are ironed out in the future. Just one week after Jenson Button's hopes of victory in China were dashed by a slow final pitstop, Lewis Hamilton experienced two pitstop errors that pushed him down the field to a disappointing eighth in Bahrain. At the first pitstop, the wheel nut pegs did not engage properly with the holes in the rim, while at the second stop the nuts cross-threaded

FIA Institute testing forward roll hoops

Formula 1 cars could be fitted with forward roll hoops in the future, if ongoing tests by the FIA Institute into increased driver protection continue to deliver good results. As part of an extensive research programme conducted in the wake of the crashes suffered by Felipe Massa and Henry Surtees in 2009, the FIA Institute has already evaluated polycarbonate windshields and jet fighter canopies to see if they can offer better driver protection. The latest tests have involved using a titanium roll hoop structure, built by the Lotus team, into which a 20kg F1 wheel is fired at 225 km/h.

Spy Shots: Opel Insignia facelift spotted... will Buick's Regal get one too?

Opel Insignia spy shots

It's no secret that the Buick Regal is an Americanized version of the Opel Insignia, and Buick even uses this fact to try and persuade the public that the car is a European sport sedan rather than just a way to try and make some profit from the black-ink-challenged Opel unit. The Opel Insignia is headed for a mid-cycle facelift very soon, and camoflaged test cars have been snagged by spy photographers.

While the models in the photographs are a European-spec hatchback and a wagon, there's clearly a new grille in the works, and the headlights and tail lamps will be changed, plus some other minor nips/tucks. The Insignia will debut the changes first, and we'd expect the Regal to pick them up soon after.

The Allen Wrench — Adding the Extras

Years ago when I started sim-racing the idea of hooking a steering wheel to a computer and driving a car on the screen was a stretch of the imagination for many.  It was kind of like wearing your favorite cartoon character’s pajamas to bed:  it wasn’t discussed in public or at the family reunion your parents just hoped one day you’d grow out of it.  While most of us did grow out of our favorite cartoon pajamas and stop wearing them, sim-racing has become more main stream, more widely accepted, and even recognized as a sport by professional racing organizations. When something becomes popular everyone starts thinking of ways to make money off of it, and sim-racing is no different.  In terms of the iRacing service, the more it grows [...]

New York: Terrafugia Transition 'Flying Car' offers serious hang time, but leaves us clouded [w/video]

Terrafugia Transition Flying Car - Live at New York Auto Show unveiling

Visitors to the New York Auto Show will be able to take a closer look at the Terrafugia Transition 'Flying Car,' just days after the company's prototype made its first flight. The two-place airworthy machine is perhaps best considered a roadgoing low-wing aircraft (not a 'flying car'), as its technical specifications are anything but earthly.

For starters, the curb weight of the composite and aluminum Transition is just 970 pounds, with a maximum takeoff weight of 1,430 pounds (useful load is 460 pounds). It is powered by a 1.4-liter Rotax 912ULS, a water-cooled flat-four developing 100 horsepower.

In aircraft mode, the thick automated electromechanical folding wings open and a gearbox transfers power to a four-bladed pusher propeller just behind the cockpit. Top speed in the non-pressurized Transition is about 115 mph, with a flying range of just over 400 miles. In terrestrial mode, with the wings folded and a license plate hanging in the slipstream, power is sent to the rear wheels and the top speed falls to just 65 mph. Fuel economy is about 35 mpg, with an on-road range in excess of 600 miles.

According to Woburn, Massachusetts-based Terrafugia, the company has more than 100 reservations for this novel contraption. If you have Popular Science dreams, get out your thickest checkbook, as the current anticipated base purchase price is a lofty $279,000.
