Take a Tour of the Sheridan Expressway (While You Still Can)

When taking a tour of the Sheridan Expressway, the first thing you realize is that you’re also taking a tour of the Bronx River Greenway. The two pieces of infrastructure — one a 1.25-mile stub of highway, the other a still-piecemeal bike and pedestrian path reconnecting Bronx neighborhoods to the water — both run through [...]

Trulli: New steering has transformed car

Jarno Trulli says the new Lotus power steering system has "transformed" his car, the Italian delighted with his performance after qualifying. Trulli had struggled with the previous power steering, which was not giving him enough feedback to feel the car properly, and so Lotus introduced a new version for this weekend's race. The Italian has been more competitive with it, and he finished less than two tenths behind team-mate Heikki Kovalainen in qualifying today, despite claiming he did not extract the best from his car.

Teams seek clarification on 2014 rules

Formula 1 teams are set to seek clarification from the FIA about the status of the 2014 regulations, amid concerns that details of the new rules having not been formally approved by them. New rules are supposed to be supported by F1's Technical Working Group and the F1 Commission, before being rubber stamped by the FIA's World Motor Sport Council. Although the principle of the 2014 rules - which include the switch to 1.6-litre V6 turbo engines and aerodynamically different chassis - have received backing from the teams and were approved by the WMSC in June, it is understood that some of the specific regulations have not yet been officially approved.

Report: Cadillac's first attempt at CTS Wagon didn't make it

first generation cadillac cts wagonSince Cadillac first unveiled the CTS as a 2003 model, the entry-level Caddy has come a long way. In fact, it is now a world-class luxury sports sedan. We've also been blessed (yes, blessed) by the arrival of the Cadillac CTS Wagon, which is available in both the enjoyable 3.6-liter flavor and the downright orgasmic V-for-Vendetta edition.

The current wagon is a brand-new varietal of the CTS family. There was no first generation CTS Wagon. Or was there?

Evan McCausland of Automobile fame ambled across a General Motors-owned parking lot that serves as a final resting place of discarded project vehicles. Parked amongst the unwanted heaps of GM iron was a wagon that caught McCausland's eye. More specifically, it appeared to be a first-generation Cadillac CTS Wagon.

Clearly, the engineers at GM have had a wagon on the brains for years. We, however, are thankful they waited for the current model to bring this plan to fruition.

Check out the Audi Allroad lookalike over at Automobile's site.

Report: Ford GT500 not going twin-turbo, will come with Camaro ZL1-beating power

Ford Shelby GT500 Spy Shot

So much for the rumors that the Ford Mustang GT500 will turn twin-turbo. According to reports buzzing around the web, the meanest snake of all will hold onto its supercharger for the foreseeable future. Even so, that blower will supposedly ensure that Ford will have a beast capable of besting the power figures produced by the menacing Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Currently, the GT500 is good for 550 horsepower, and some sources have indicated that the 2014 model will come to the table with at least a 20 pony bump in grunt. Even with 570 hp on tap, the vehicle isn't expected to be a complete redesign when it arrives in early 2013.

Instead, a completely fresh Mustang is slated to show its face in 2014 as a 2015 model. Specifics on that particular beast are murky at best, but chances are we'll hear more as the years tick down. Keep your ears to the ground.

Official: Toyota UK reveals new Yaris hatchback

Toyota Yaris hatchback UK

Toyota UK has dropped the curtain on its new Yaris. The subcompact hatch - likely identical to the 2012 Yaris arriving in the States this fall - benefits from a more dynamic design and additional standard equipment on all but its entry-level model. All UK-bound Yaris models, 'cept for the T2 base version, feature a new Toyota "affordable multimedia connectivity" system called Touch and Go.

Over in the UK, the Yaris is offered in four trims: T2, TR, SR and T Spirit. Toyota says the "heart of the range" is the mid-level TR, which is expected to command two thirds of sales. The TR can be ordered up with any of the three available engines (1.0-liter VVT-i, 1.3-liter Dual VVT-i and 1.4-liter D-4D) and a choice of three transmissions (five-speed manual, six-speed manual and Toyota's Multidrive S CVT) in both three and five-door bodystyles. Key features of the TR include 15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, stability control, Bluetooth and a rear-mounted parking camera.

The three available engines start with the base 1.0-liter VVT-i gasser with 68 horsepower. Moving up, there's the 1.33-liter Dual VVT-i gasoline engine with 98 hp. Finally, the 1.4-liter D-4D diesel engine cranks out 89 hp and 151 pound-feet of torque. The fuel-sipping diesel returns an estimated 72.4 miles per imperial gallon (60.3 mpg U.S.).

Prices range from £11,170 ($17,816 U.S. at current exchange rates - including VAT) for the base, three-door T2 version to £15,385 ($24,593 U.S.) for the premium-level, five-door T Spirit. Toyota is now taking orders for the new Yaris and says the subcompact hatch will hit showrooms in the UK by mid-September.

While North America will undoubtedly not get all of these powertrain options, we're looking forward to seeing our own 2012 Yaris very soon.

Study: Scion, Mitsubishi and Mazda top brands among Gen Y buyers

Scion emblem

Sure, every age demographic is important to marketing and sales teams in the automotive industry. But automakers would love nothing more than to grab hold of a young person and instill brand loyalty at an early age.

Which manufacturers are actually doing that? According to a study conducted by TrueCar.com, car shoppers aged between 18 and 27 years old are flocking to Scion, Mitsubishi and Mazda.

Referred to as Generation Y, this group represents a vital segment of the car-shopping public. If a brand can grab you here, it has a strong chance of grabbing you again down the road. In 2009 and 2010, Scion was able to capture 21.2 percent of the Gen Y car buyers. Mitsubishi was close behind with 20.3 percent of that market, and Mazda was third with 10.7 percent. Surprisingly, Bugatti failed to make the list.

TrueCar.com also took a look at the specific models that appeal to this young segment of shoppers. The Scion tC, Mitsubishi Lancer and Honda Civic Si nabbed the top three spots for sales in the previous two years. Generation Y clearly has a thing for imports, and you can dig deeper into TrueCar's findings by reading the full press release posted after the jump.

Report: Chinese police caught rebadging Mercedes as Honda to avoid taxpayer ire

ml350 china cop car with honda badge

Perhaps there was once a time when the Chinese citizenry couldn't tell the difference between a Mercedes-Benz and a Honda. In today's car-crazy China, however, this is clearly no longer the case. That didn't stop police in Fangchenggang (part of Guangxi Province) from performing a low-tech badge swap on a Mercedes-Benz ML350 in a bid to make it look like a run-of-the-mill Honda, right down to CR-V emblem on the rear liftgate.

Car News China reports that the police did it to fool taxpayers into thinking that the department didn't spend big bucks on a Benz. An ML350 reportedly costs around 900,000 yuan ($139,000 USD), which is a lot more than Honda CR-V, which runs around 200,000 yuan ($30,000 or so). As you may have guessed, the ridiculous (and failed) cover-up attempt by the cops angered residents whole lot more than if they'd simply rolled out, baller style, in the Mercedes from the beginning.

Williams won’t get early Renault test

Renault's managing director Jean-Francois Caubet says Williams is very likely to have to wait until February next year before it tests the French engines. The Grove team announced a Renault engine deal on Monday, in an agreement that sees the two parties reviving a relationship that brought them nine championships in the past. Caubet said, however, that Williams will have to wait until the first test of 2012 before it can run its new engines.

Rossi: Ducati needs more upgrades

Valentino Rossi says Ducati needs to come up with further new developments to address the issues with the front end of its bike as switching to the 2012 chassis has not solved the problem. Official: NHTSA assessing pedestrian warning systems for hybrid and electric vehicles [w/poll]

The addition of pedestrian warning systems on sometimes near-silent vehicles like the electric Nissan Leaf and hybrid Toyota Prius has been the subject of much debate, but with the U.S. House and Senate passing a measure that requires hybrids and plug-in vehicles to emit an audible sound to warn nearby pedestrians, like it or not, these noise-making systems will soon become standard on all electric-drive autos sold in the U.S.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced that it has taken the first steps toward proposing regulations to "protect unsuspecting pedestrians" from accidents involving near-silent vehicles. Says U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood:
America's streets must be safe for everyone who uses them. As we improve the environment with cleaner cars, we must also consider how it affects those on bikes and on foot.
The NHTSA is beginning to lay out its proposed regulations for pedestrian warning systems. This may take some time, but eventually the agency will evaluate noise-making systems and publish its recommendations in the Federal Register. At that time, the public will have 30 days to submit comments on the NHTSA's proposed rules.

Ahead of that, feel free to cast either a Yea or Nay vote on noisemakers in general in our informal poll below.

Sylvain Guintoli could return to MotoGP for the German Grand Prix to substitute for the injured Pramac rider Loris Capirossi. World Superbike racer Guintoli competed in MotoGP with Tech 3 Yamaha in 2007 and Pramac Ducati in 2008, taking a best result of fourth with a spectacular ride for Tech 3 in the wet 2007 Japanese GP. The 29-year-old Frenchman departed for Superbikes, first in the British championship then at world level, in 2009 following a tough season with Pramac, but has now been invited to test for the Italian squad at Mugello on Monday

Hamilton desperate for more success

Lewis Hamilton has admitted that he is concerned about his place in Formula 1's record books if he is not able to emulate the dominant form Sebastian Vettel is currently showing. Vettel took Hamilton's place as F1's youngest ever world champion when he secured the 2010 title, appears to be on the way to a second straight crown, and after Valencia last weekend has now won more grands prix than the McLaren driver. Hamilton told the Daily Express that it was extremely important to him that he left the sport as a multiple champion.
