Study: GMAC Insurance test suggests one-in-five drivers would fail driver's test

driving fail

Our roadways are filled with crappy drivers. It's an unfortunate fact that we take our lives into our hands every time we strap on a seatbelt and head out on the open road. But at least we all have passed the most basic test of driving skill, right?

Sadly, according to a recent test carried out by GMAC Insurance, a driver's license may not mean what we think it means. Apparently, one-in-five drivers would fail their driver's test if they had to retake it today. Such simple rules about what to do when approaching a yellow light and how much distance to leave in between the car ahead were answered incorrectly by a shocking three out of four drivers.

After three consecutive years at the bottom of the list, New York drivers managed to move up to 45th, leaving the District of Columbia to earn their spot as the worst drivers in America. Kansas drivers scored the highest. In other us-versus-them news, men managed to score a significant six-percent better than women, and drivers between the ages of 60 and 65 scored the highest.

Check out the complete press release after the break for more interesting tidbits, and feel free to take a simple test yourself at the GMAC Insurance website.

Long-Term 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate - Click above for high-res image gallery

The long-term 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate made its way into my driveway a few weeks ago, and since being handed the keys, I've added 1,900 miles to the odometer, putting our total distance traveled at just over 5,400 miles since the car's March arrival at Autoblog Towers.

Like us on Facebook to see all of our long-term vehicle updates
Like both editor-in-chief John Neff and editor/test fleet manager Steven J. Ewing, I've been bombarded with compliments and curious questions about the Equus - and that's before I tell them that they're looking at a $65,000 Hyundai. It helps that the Equus looks like almost nothing else on the road, with its alien grille, massive proportions and over-the-top headlamps.

So far, I'm really enjoying my time with the Equus, and I'll have a full rundown of specific pros and cons next month. Over the course of my 1,900-mile stint, I've averaged 20 miles per gallon flat - besting the 19.1 mpg that Ewing and Neff saw last month. But while the month of May has been mostly all stars, there was one service hiccup that reared its ugly head...

Mercedes GP needs to bring bigger improvements to its car if it is going to launch a serious challenge against the front-running Red Bull Racing and McLaren teams later this year. Kelley Blue Book has a new look

Kelley Blue Book's new look - Click above for high-res image gallery

A Kleenex, a Band-Aid, a Thermos. Sometimes, one product in a segment becomes so ubiquitous that it becomes a brand-name ambassador for the entire genre. Say "pass me a Kleenex" and you will receive a tissue, regardless of what the side of the box it's plucked from reads. If you need a Band-Aid, someone will find you an adhesive dressing. Thermos? Same deal.

Kelley Blue Book is one such brand name.

In 1926, Les Kelley published his first Blue Book. Originally a packet of pages filled with his valuations for used cars, the Blue Book expanded to include new cars in 1966. As our world became increasingly digital, Kelley Blue Book extended its footprint to the Internet in 1993, and the Kelley Blue Book soon began to enter the lexicon of the car buying consumer in a new way.

Now, in 2011, KBB stands as the largest automotive valuation company. That's 85 years in business and 18 years on the web, and now, like the Orange County neighbors that surround KBB HQ, the brand is ready for a facelift.

Todt pushing ahead with 2013 engines

FIA president Jean Todt has told engine manufacturers that there will be no delay to his plans to introduce smaller turbocharged power-units in 2013 - although there may be room for some compromise in allowing teams to continue using the current V8s for an extra year. Todt met with representatives of the teams and engine makers in the Barcelona paddock on Saturday to engage in discussions about progress towards the new 1.6-litre units that are in the rules for 2013. With sources suggesting that Cosworth, Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari wrote a joint letter to Todt to indicate their concerns about pushing ahead with the 2013 rules, there have been questions raised about whether the sport can continue with the plan

Franco Cagayat and his auotmotive sculpture
Franco Cagayat and his automotive sculpture - Click above to watch video after the jump

We've seen some pretty amazing things happen when talent mixes with the proper medium, but this takes the cake. Top Gear Philippines magazine is featuring a story on Franco Cagayat, an autistic 21-year-old sculptor who specializes in carving detailed vehicle models from a single block of wood. Complete with doors that open and close, full interiors and complete engine bays, the vehicles are unlike anything we've ever seen. Cagayat says he got started by drawing every vehicle he saw and eventually learned to translate that talent into sculpting.

The artist first became a fan of Top Gear when a classmate offered to trade him a copy of the magazine for a wooden Ferrari Testarossa. We think Cagayat probably got the short end of the stick on that one, but he now uses the photos in the publication for reference when it comes time to carve the newest supercars of the world. Hit the jump to take a look at a video interview with Cagayat.

McLaren duo: 2011 rules great for F1

McLaren duo Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton say that critics complaining about there being too much overtaking in Formula 1 should back off in their downbeat assessment of the sport. The new DRS, the return of KERS and Pirelli's rubber have all contributed to a much more exciting F1 in 2011, and that has helped produce races with more overtaking moves than have been seen for many years.

Parents ensuring Spencer Clark’s legacy lives on

Spencer ClarkLosing a race barely moves the needle on life’s Richter scale. You prepare the car and race it the best you can. T.J. Paul Newman's mid-engine V8 Beetle on sale for $250K

paul newman's v8 volkswagen beetle

This Volkswagen Beetle is priced to sell at $250,000. No, there's no typo in that figure. This 1963 VW Bug has celebrity ownership, as it once belonged to Mr. Paul Newman. Still not doing it for you at that price? Perhaps a peak under the hood will change your mind.

Paul Newman loved him some fast cars, and this '63 Beetle is no exception. Rather than stick with the old four-cylinder lump in the rear, Newman had IndyCar builder Jerry Eisert set out to turn the droptop bug into a super sleeper.

Eisert dropped a Ford 351 V8 into the middle of the Volkswagen. He added the five-speed ZF transmission (thought to have come from a Ford GT40), and the now-transformed Beetle was pushing out 300-horsepower. That's a whole lot of juice for this bantam-weight brawler. So much, in fact, that Newman's handlers advised him to sell the car before he got into serious trouble with it.

Paul Newman's Volkswagen Beetle Convertible sleeper is now up for sale, after receiving a full restoration. The seller wants $250,000 but is open to "serious offers." While we think 250 large is rather optimistic, there's no doubt this car has the potential to plaster permanent smiles on anyone who drives it. Check out OldBug.com for a look at the car's history.

Official: Ferrari renews Fernando Alonso's contract through 2016

Fernando Alonso

Few things inspire as much rumor and conjecture as the hiring and firing of Formula 1 drivers. This one's going here, that one's staying there, one is hired and another is fired. But Fernando Alonso seems to have his seat secure for the foreseeable future.

Scuderia Ferrari has announced that it and Alonso have renewed their contract through 2016, making the two-time world champion's job one of the most secure on the grid. Alonso described the move as, "natural for me to decide to extend my relationship in the long-term like this, with a team at which I will no doubt end my Formula 1 career one day."

Of course that's also what Kimi Raikkonen said, before being shown the door - just a couple of years after winning the championship for Ferrari - to make room for Alonso. In an environment as volatile as F1, the value of a contract can change just that quickly. But short of that, Alonso looks poised to stay in scarlet for years to come. Official announcement after the jump.

Rossi impressed with Silverstone

Valentino Rossi was delighted with his first impression of the Silverstone grand prix track after riding it on a roadgoing Ducati during the launch of the circuit's new 'wing' paddock complex today. The seven-time MotoGP champion missed last year's British Grand Prix - the first to be held at Silverstone after the race moved from Donington Park - as he recovered from the broken leg he sustained at Mugello, so this was his first chance to get to grips with the track. "A very good track.

Marco Simoncelli has promised to ride sensibly and finish tomorrow's French Grand Prix after his recent crashes. Report: And we're back! Top Gear returns June 12

Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond

It's the news we've all been waiting for: the imminent return of everyone's favorite car show, Top Gear. The hit BBC television program has been on break since the 16th season ended on February 27 with episode 6, in which Hammond drove the Porsche 959 and Ferrari F40, May tested NASA's new lunar rover and Clarkson raced the sun in a Jaguar XJ.

Now FinalGear.com - the website that tracks everything Top Gear - reports that the new season (that's #17 if you're counting) will begin airing on June 12. The report comes courtesy of the May issue of the Dutch edition of Top Gear magazine.

So what can we expect from season 17? Hard to say - so far we know Clarkson and May have driven a pair of electric cars, we've heard the newly-wed Prince Harry could be making his way to the Dunsfold Aerodrome (a.k.a. the Top Gear test track) and we've seen reports that the McLaren MP4-12C may have already claimed the fastest lap time on the board. For everything else, we'll just have to wait (less than a month now, mind you) to find out.

And we're back! Top Gear returns June 12 originally appeared on Autoblog on Tue, 17 May 2011 19:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Lorenzo: Warm-up crash hurt race

Jorge Lorenzo reckoned fourth was the best result possible in the French Grand Prix after he sustained a finger injury in a crash in the warm-up at Le Mans. The world champion fell early in the warm-up and severely damaged his Yamaha, though a huge effort by the team got it back into shape in time for the race. Lorenzo had tough battles with Andrea Dovizioso, Valentino Rossi and Marco Simoncelli as he fought for a podium during the event, before a late error dropped him out of the battle for second and left him to finish fourth
